My wonderful roommate Mary has to move in a month :'( *sniff* and so now I need a new roommate. If you or anyone you know is looking for a place, please let me know! Here are some details about the apartment:
- location: Christopher Village, 4935 Old Post Road, Ogden
- 1050 sq. ft.
- Living room, den, kitchen, dining area, 2 bedrooms 1 1/2 baths
- Rent $300/month + utilities (utilities range from $30-40 each per month)
- there's a pool!
We will only have 6 months left on the lease and after that I will probably move too, so I really only need a roommate until January.

Memorial Day Weekend
It was a great weekend and I had a lot of fun, despite the sadness that still hung in the air from the passing of Gusty.
Friday:It's nice that even in a time of mourning we can find reason to celebrate. One of my very good friends, Andrea Uhrey, had a birthday on Thursday so on Friday we surprised her with her very first surprise birthday party. It was at our friend Julie's house and we hid in her basement while we waited. And waited. And waited a little longer. Just kidding, we didn't really wait that long Andrea ;) When she came down and we yelled "Suprise!" the look on her face was classic. She looked like she'd been shot or something. Then she had to walk away to compose herself. I'm so glad she was surprised!
We spent the evening talking, eating, and playing Mario Kart. And laughing at funny things like when Andrea so gracefully slid onto the couch and I so ungracefully fell onto the couch because my pant leg was stuck under someone's rear. Good times, good memories. Thanks for being born Andrea!
I love how Janel is the only one smiling in this picture!
Saturday:
I was incredibly lazy during the day. But it was really nice, because I don't get to do that very often. That night though, a friend took me to Tepanyaki for my first time ever. What a crazy place. I've definitely never been anywhere like it. Our chef was really cool and he did fun things like pee on me with his fireman squirt gun thing. He also did very well throwing shrimp into our mouths. I think we all caught it, even me! After dinner we saw Prince Caspian, which is a very good movie and I highly recommend it.
Sunday:
Nothing really out of the ordinary this day. I went to church as usual and the choir performed a medley of songs which I accompanied. After church I went to my parent's house for dinner. Then I had to go to ward prayer because I was being spotlighted. Yay. One of the questions I had to answer was "What was your most uncomfortable moment?" and my answer was "My first kiss." If you want to know why, you'll have to ask me.
Monday:
I love Memorial Day! Except it seems like the weather is always bad. But even though it was rainy, it was still fun. We went up to Tremonton, as usual, and put flowers on my grandma's grave, then we went to my great-aunt and uncle's house to visit. They ended up making us lunch while we were there, so we didn't get to follow our tradition of eating at Mack's :( Oh well, it was really good and I enjoyed seeing them. I think I want to live in Tremonton.
This is my mom with her cousin Laurie, and her Aunt Golda and Uncle Carmi.
On a different and much sadder note, Gusty's funeral was today. It was my first time going to a Catholic funeral, so it was a little strange for me. Interesting, just different. You definitely get your exercise from all the standing up and sitting down. I was impressed by how many people were there. I think our company took up most of the right side of the chapel. I guess I shouldn't be surprised as Gusty had friends everywhere she went and touched a lot of people. I felt awful for her girls; the older one didn't stop crying through the whole thing. I hope they can get through the whole ordeal unscathed.

Donuts anyone?
You Are a Powdered Devil's Food Donut |
A total sweetheart on the outside, you love to fool people with your innocent image. On the inside you're a little darker, richer, and more complex. You're a hedonist who demands more than one pleasure at a time. Decadent and daring, you test the limits of human indulgence. |
In Memory of Gusty
So my boss called me last night at 9:30. He doesn't usually do that, so a couple things went through my mind before I answered. Either something was wrong or he really needed to tell me something before we got in to work today. Turned out it was a little of both. I sat there in shock as he informed me that our coworker, Gusty Colonna, had passed away earlier that day. She died in her sleep, of natural causes.
Gusty was my "other half" in the work sense. She was the Sales Admin and I'm the Marketing Admin. Our cubicles were right next to each other, so for the last year I have gotten to know her pretty well. She was an amazingly friendly person and made friends everywhere she went. People loved her. She was sensitive to other's feelings, a good mom, and was happy to do whatever she was asked. And she was only 35.
This is the first time I've been faced with the death of someone I know really well. I have had a couple of grandparents die, but they were both sick and it was...expected to happen I guess. This was not expected. It has put a lot of things into perspective for me. Life is such a precious, fragile thing and death can be so sudden and unexpected. We should never take for granted that which has been given to us. We should live for every moment, every day, every year that we are blessed to be alive.
How grateful I am for the knowledge I have that this life is not the end. With the sadness comes a kind of happiness that those who have left aren't gone forever. Gusty was a single mom with a lot of pain, struggles, and stress in her life. I'm happy that she is free from that now. My heart goes out to Gusty's family, especially her two girls. I pray that they will learn to deal with and understand what has happened.
It's a somber day in the office today.

Guatemala update
Yesterday I got an email from the lady in charge of the group that's going to Guatemala. Can I just say I am SO excited?? For those of you who may be somewhat clueless about this, I am going with a group of 25 people to Guatemala for a week and a half in July (47 days to be precise). We're working at an orphanage, as well as doing a little sight seeing. The email I got yesterday listed all the projects we will be working on and we just had to let her know what we would like to do. Here's an excerpt from the email describing what we will be doing:
"PROJECTS:
1. Organizing the bodega (supply house) and the children's supplies: The bodega currently has many boxes of supplies that are not shelved and many of the things that are shelved are not well organized. You would be organizing the bodega according to Vicki's instructions, doing an inventory of what each child has and needs and then supplying what they need from the bodega. The bodega is about a block from the orphanage. We will need about 4-5 people for this project.
2. Rocking the babies/little children: This project is pretty tough duty! Vicki has a woman who comes in a couple of times a week to rock the children but, of course, with children who have been severely abused and neglected, the kids never seems to get enough cuddling. We just bought 2 comfortable new rocking chairs for this project. It could be interspersed with working at the bodega since they are so close together. One of the rocking chairs will be used by my sister Nancy who recently recovered from cancer. Her doctor told her she could go with us if she doesn't tire herself out. So, when Vicki mentioned this project, Nancy jumped at it -- well, she didn't really jump because she doesn't have that much energy most days, but she was excited. So, we will need another woman who can do some baby rocking.
3. Building and installing shelving in the rented facility where the orphanage is now, building tables for various uses and building garden boxes on the land where the new orphanage is being built: The rented facility where the children are right now has little if any shelving for individual children. Those who work on this project would be making the shelving and installing it in the orphanage so the people working in the bodega can organize the supplies needed for each child. When the shelving is done, these people would go out to the land where the new facility is being built and building large garden boxes.
4. Clearing and planting the land at the site of the new orphanage: The land in at least one of the flat areas of the site was cleared at one time so doesn't have thick foliage, but some weeds and grasses have grown back so those need to be cleared. Also, you will be doing some planting in the cleared areas. The site of the new orphanage is about 25 min from the hotel. For those who are going to be doing this work, it is absolutely necessary that you wear tennis-type or athletic shoes, longer socks and long pants in case you disturb an ant nest. The ants aren't poisonous (unless you are extremely allergic to bee or insect bites or get stung many, many times) but they can sting so it's just a precaution. This is "informed consent," as my lawyer husband would say.
5. Working on the second building of the new orphanage facility: This project will be directed by the Guatemalan contractor as well as a contractor from our group, David Anderson. The directors plan for one of the buildings to be built when we get there and for us to work on the second building. Sometimes, things don't go quite a planned in Guatemala. You'll see that when we get there. So, you just have to take whatever the situation is and go from there."
And my favorite:
"Lunch will be brought to the various work sites. At the new building site the Mayan grandmother who sold the land to the orphanage has a little store directly across the street. She is ageless, toothless and pretty savy. She already has plans for her nephew to have an additional stand set up by her store for selling things. Waters will be available to you from us, but she and her nephew will also be selling waters, snacks and sodas all day. If you buy sodas from her, either get them in plastic bottles or drink them right there in her little store or she will charge you for the glass bottle as well as the soda in it."
I told her I would like to do the first two things (can't get much better than organizing stuff and rocking babies!) and I was the first one to reply (the benefits of working in an office with a computer) so I will get to do what I want.
By the way, I set up a group on Facebook called Guatemala Orphanage Donations. Check it out if you are interested in donating anything for me to take down with me. If you haven't joined the world of Facebookers and are still interested, let me know and I can send a list of things the orphanage needs.

Bonfires
One of the best parts about the arrival of summer is being able to....go outside! I love to take advantage of warm weather and do all the outdoorsy stuff. Last night some friends and I went to two bonfires. The first one was hosted by our friend Jill, and it was there that I learned about Mushroom Delight. Now I normally really do not like mushrooms, but this was really yummy. To make it, you take a mushroom and wrap a piece of raw bacon around it, then stick it on a skewer and hold it over the fire. When it reaches desired crispiness (I like my bacon nice and crispy), take it out of the fire and use a piece of Swiss cheese to take it off the skewer. Then, you stuff (name that movie!) It's very yummy.
Here we all are. Left to right: Julie, Stacey, me and Kristianne:
Funny faces! This is like the best funny face picture I have ever taken. I love how it looks like Stacey is pointing to my face.
On the way to the second bonfire we stopped to go to the bathroom. Here are a couple of pictures from inside the bathroom. Pretty nice eh? Who knew Smith's had such nice bathrooms?
Here's a pic from the 2nd bonfire. It was at my cousin Nick's house. My camera died shortly after so there were some good pictures I didn't get. Like of Nick blowing fire. It was pretty sweet.
So there you have it. The first bonfires of the summer. Hopefully there will be many more to come!
Speaking of summer stuff, I'm going to start an ongoing list on the right side of things to do this summer. Please feel free to give any suggestions that you have!

Another thing that makes me happy
So I'm not gonna lie. I really love my car. I know it's all worldly and stuff, but I can't halp it. It was my first real adult purchase and I'm so proud of it. You know how something is worth more to you when you work for it? Well the same is true with my car. It's kind of like my baby and I try to take care of it that way. I've even given her a name: Bella (the Italian pronunciation). A few weeks ago I completely detailed the inside, and today I detailed the outside, complete with paint protector, window cleaner, and stuff for the tires. Look how pretty!
It's funny, my family has turned into the Mazda family. Seriously, I think we play a big part in keeping Bountiful Mazda in business. I'm on my 3rd Mazda (Protoge, 626, and now 3) since I was 18. My sister has the 626 now, my brother also has a 626, my dad has a 3 and my mom has an MPV. A lady in my home ward told my dad once that our driveway looks like a Mazda dealership. She's kind of right. Here's what it looks like when all of the cars are there (2 in the garage, 3 in the driveway):

Fashion Show
Ok here are the pics finally. I'll go through a rundown of how the day went first.
7:30 am - arrived at the DATC for hair and makeup
9:30 am - got my hair done (I had to wait for my friend to do her other model first so she could go home and feed her baby).
10:45 am - got my makeup done (it was chaos in there)
12:00 pm - arrived at the mall, went to the secret holding room, got my clothes, changed, and got put in line
1:00 pm - Fashion show began
2:00 pm - Show ended
So it was kind of a long day. It was pretty fun though. I got to watch a lot of people get their hair and makeup done, which was kind of fun. We also had before and after pictures taken by a professional photographer. I think he said he's going to email them to us, so hopefully I'll get those soon.
The secret holding room at the mall was one of the offices downstairs; you get to them by going through a door in between Dairy Queen and Sensei. It was HOT down there. After eveyone was in their clothes (another chaotic event), we were led outside, back inside, down some stairs, and came out by Sports Authority and the kids' playplace. Then the show started! I actually got to go up there a couple of different times. The first time was with 2 other people so they could talk about extensions (I had pink clip-in extensions. They were totally sweet). The second time was when i actually modeled the clothes. We all had a 3x5 card to give to the MC so he could talk about what we were wearing as we walked. So I gave him my card and started walking, concentrating so hard that I forgot to smile! I realized it right when I walked off. Oh well. Real models never smile anyway right?
Then after eveyone had walked, we all walked through again, really quickly one after the other. Then we went back and changed, and finally we were free! I was so hot I had to get ice cream from Chick-Fil-A.

What exactly was I thinking?
I'm not sure.
So a couple of months ago my friend Malinda sent out a message on Facebook asking for volunteers for a fashion show that the DATC (Davis Applied Technology College) Cosmetology program is putting on. The words that caught me were "free haircut". Also free highlights, eyebrow wax, and the BEST part (sarcasm), modeling an outfit from a store in the mall AT the mall. Yikes. So not me. I really love my haircut though. I got it cut last night, and didn't take too much off since I had already gotten it cut back in March. Mostly trimmed and cut more of an A-line in the back. Love it!
Before:
After:
She also waxed my eyebrows (I have NEVER done anything to my eyebrows, so it hurt a little bit), and practiced my makeup for the show. Here I am after the makeup. Wowza! There will be a lot of lights. (And the pinkness in between my eyebrows is from the waxing, just so you know.)
On Tuesday I went to the mall to try on clothes and get an outfit for the show. I was assigned to Maurices, which I love. After about an hour, this is what we came up with:
I really like the shorts and might actually buy them afterwards (we don't get to keep the clothes unfortunately). So tonight is the dress rehearsal, and tomorrow is the real thing! It will be at the Layton Hills Mall at 1:00 in the center court downstairs. So right by all the jewelry stores the day before Mother's Day. Fabulous. Wish me luck! I hope I don't trip.

Which Vampire is Hotter?
Edward, Jasper, or Emmett? If you said Edward, you're right! Seriously though, for some reason the Twilight books have taken the nation by storm. I admit, I've read them all twice and am counting down the days to the release of book #4 and movie #1. But what is it exactly that makes them so great? Is it the fact that they're about vampires that act like decent human beings? Is it the action? Or is it because Edward is the epitomy of the "dream guy"? Personally, though he is hot, I think he's a little controlling. But I still find myself sucked into the romantic whirlwind that Stephanie Meyer has created between a vampire and a human. For those of you who haven't read the books...what's wrong with you? And for those of you who have, I'm sure most have already posted the trailer for the upcoming movie on your blogs, so I'll refrain. Let's just say it's going to be a GREAT movie.
Apparently Stephanie has written another book, not in the Twilight series, called The Host. It looks...interesting. I'm sure it will be great, just not the same as the vampires we all know and love. I'll probably read it sooner or later, but for now I'm counting down the days until August 2nd and December 12th!

The Weekend
I had a great weekend. I just love spending time with friends! Friday night my friend Stacey had a Jazz Party had her house. We got to watch the Jazz beat the Rockets in style on the big screen. I'm SO glad they won because it would have been embarrassing if they hadn't. Especially after the last game.
Saturday was an incredibly busy day with going to the temple first thing in the morning, then playing soccer for like half an hour, then going to the Christmas Box House. The House is a place for abused/neglected children to stay until they can either go back home or be placed in foster care. I stayed there for a couple of hours, during which time I did basically nothing. When I got there the kids were eating lunch, so I sat with some of them while they ate. Then one of the kids was missing his MP3 player, so everyone got sent to their rooms until it showed up (they didn't know if it was misplaced or if someone took it, so the staff spent that time searching everywhere for it while I sat on the couch. I'm just a volunteer and it was my first time there so I felt a little awkward). Then I left, took a nap, got up and got ready, and left for a wedding reception in Provo. It was for a girl that served in my mission, so I picked up another girl from the mish, my good friend Jarilyn, on the way. We had a great time riding there and back together, talking about...well boys mainly. I'll just say we're both a little frustrated right now. But it was a lot of fun, and Liesel, the bride, looked so beautiful. Here we are! :
After the reception I was still starving, of course, so we stopped at a McDonald's. First of all, when we pulled up, there were NO cars in the parking lot. I thought, "Are they closed?" It was only like 7:30. So we sat there for a minute, then decided to check it out. So we tried the door and it opened! Of course they were open. Then we noticed the TVs. McDonald's had plasma screen TVs on the walls. What has this world come to?
On the way home I had to stop and get gas, so we got off the freeway in Highland and went to the Maverik right there. While there, a big white van pulled up about 30 feet in front of us to put air in the tires. All these guys in tuxes got out (before you say oooooooh, guys in tuxes; they were on their way to the prom. High school.) Anyways, Jarilyn and I were sitting in my car taking pictures of ourselves to document the occasion, and all of a sudden one of the guys comes sauntering towards us. He stops a few feet away, stretches, and begins to dance. I wouldn't call it slow-dancing, or hip-hop, or anything like that. It was more like....interpretive dance? Anyways, of course we busted up laughing, which made him do it even more. He danced his way around my car, and came around the passenger side (I thought he was going to get in), waving his arms like he was a river. It was so awesome. Then we drove away and waved. Jarilyn took a picture of the van, and then we scolded ourselves for not filming the whole thing. Oh well. Hopefully I painted a good enough picture with my words.
Me and Jarilyn at the gas station right before the "performance".

Weight Loss
As of this morning I have lost 2 pounds! Yay! I'm thinking of upping my goal to 10 pounds.
Memories #.....5?
I decided to do this post on school memories. I think that if I could go back to any time in my life, it would be to elementary school. How can you get better? Recess, double-dutch jump rope, library day, hardly any homework. It was great! When I think back on elementary school I always think of my favorite teacher, Miss Stiles. This was 4th grade and was kind of an interesting year. I started of the year with Mrs. Dokalovich (Mrs. D), but she left at the end of October to have a baby. Then we had Mrs. Gialanella (sp? we called her Mrs. G.), who was just a long-term sub until Christmas break. After the break Miss Stiles started and she was the best! She was young, I think she had just graduated not to long before, and she was actually LDS (we lived in CA, so that was kind of odd). She was so nice, and if I do say so myself, I think I may have been one of her favorites. When I was about 16 or something we went to visit old friends in Cali and while we were there we went to a wedding reception for a girl who was in our ward there. While we were there Miss Stiles walked in! By that time she was a Mrs., but I don't remember her married last name. My mom told me to go say hi to her, but I didn't want to because I didn't think she would remember me. But she came right up to me and gave me a hug and said, "Of course I remember you!" It was great. Here I am with her and my youngest sister:
I have always been an avid reader. My favorite day of the week at school was library day; especially after I hit 3rd grade and was allowed to check out two books a week instead of just one. A lot of classes did reading contests and gave prizes to the student who read the most books in a certain month. I won this one:
Each feather on the turkey represents one book read in the month of November. Don't be too impressed though. I bet most of them were Babysitter's Club books. I'm pretty sure I was addicted to those.
At the end of every school year the whole school put on a spring show thing, doing dances and singing songs and stuff. My fourth grade year was probably the coolest year when we did an awesome hip-hop dance choreographed by my neighbor Cindy Rivera. The fifth graders always did the Maypole Dance, and I couldn't wait to do that one. Finally the year arrived, and here we are (I'm the one in the back wearing the white dress with flowers):
On a side note, in a previous "Memories" post I talked about participating in the 4th of July parades every year and mentioned that one year my whole family dressed up like the Jetsons. I found the picture, and I'm pretty sure we were the most decked-out family at the parade:
